Top 10 best dogs to have around the house
81Have you ever wanted a dog around the house to talk to or have some company. In this article, I will give you a list of 10 dogs, with some facts about them, and hope that you find a dog to adopt. Remember that a dog is also a responsibility, and you must take care of them. You have to feed and water them, comb them(for the hairy dogs), and even buy them flea collars.
Even though most of the dogs in this article are going to be small dogs, some of them will be considered large. Most people like to have small dogs around the house, because they are lap-dogs. This means that they cant sit on the couch with you, sit in the chair with you, and generally are easier to clean up after. By the way, I put up pictures of each dog on the side, they are so cute!!! Without any further ado, here is our Top 10 Household dogs:
1) Yorkshire Terrier
This dog can be a lot of different colors, and have been known to be show dogs. They usually live for about 13 to 16 years. They are great lap-dogs, and love to cuddle. A Yorkie is a great pet for the elderly, because they can usually be potty-trained fairly easy.
2) Poodle
A poodle is one of those dogs you see on TV with their legs and neck shaved. They are great show pets, as their coat can range in thicknesses and color. Their coat requires a great amount of grooming, and would be great for a family of 4 or more. There are 4 types of poodles: Standard, medium, miniature, and toy. I would recommend all of these except for toy, as this is extremely small, and hard to keep track of.
3) Dachshund
Also known as "Wiener Dogs" because of their long bodies, and short size, they are so fun to have around the house. Their life span is around 14 years. There are short-haired and long-haired wiener dogs. Their paws are useful for digging, so I buy a leash to put them on for walks or whenever they have to go outside.
4) Pug
Most pugs live around 12 to 15 years, but have been know to live longer. They love children and think of them as their own siblings, often forming a bond with them. They also love to play, making them the perfect companion to children. They rarely bark, but they have been known to have lots of health problems.
5) Labrador Retriever
While being probably one of the most known dogs in the world, they are often used as hunting dogs. they like to be outside, and to chase small game like rabbits. They also can be very affectionate and an indoor dog. This is probably one of the large dogs that are good around the house. They also have been known to be seeing dogs for the blind.
6) ShihTzu
Shihtzus (or is it Shihtzi?) can live for about 16 years. The 12-16 life span is common for most dogs. These dogs are known for their beautiful and long coat. This dog is very caring, and needs lots of love. I would recommend this dog for the elderly because they need lots of time being loved, groomed, and are easy to take care of.
7) Jack Russell Terrier
They love to play, and have tons of energy. This is a great dogs to have when you have toddlers, or any other children in the house. They have even been known to help children. A bulldog was attacking small children, so George (the dog) ran up and held off the bulldogs until they children could get away. Make sure that you train them good, or they might hurt strangers. Sometimes they also seem to get overexcited when guest are over, and tinkle on the floor.
8) Basset Hound
Another child lover, the Basset Hound is also great for hunting. They should be kept on a leash when on walks though, because they sometimes forget their training when a reward is not around. They are a bit harder to train than some dogs. But if you stick with them, I'm sure that you will find how good they can be.
9) Pomeranian
This breed is a great indoor/household dog because they don't like to be outside, and often run away if they do get the chance. So I would buy a leash for bathroom breaks. They have a beautiful coat, and like to follow you everywhere - which may be annoying for some.
10) Miniature Schnauzer
These dogs are so energetic and full of energy. They shed very little hair, and would be great for children. They can adapt to small city apartments, but like to live on farms, or a house with a backyard. They have a little tail that sticks straight up, and their coat is usually a salt and/or pepper color. They have been known to be very intelligent and witty.

I actually wrote a hub about it and have tons of pictures of him on there lol His name is Dexter. He was from a litter of 5, from 2 different fathers. 3 Looked just like the pug father but with long hair like the mother lol. Dexter looks the most like a pug and the older he gets the more wrinkles he is getting lol
I suppose this is a pretty good guide!
We have eight dogs (including SognoPiccolo's Dexter makes 9) in the house and one cat. Lol. I'm pretty familiar with almost all the dogs on that list!
No, we're not related. She's my best friend who is living with me at the moment. I guess you can say we are related in a soul-linked way.. like soul sister? Lol.
Yeah, we know all about dogs here! Haha.
omg i always thought wiener dogs were always regarded as not a good apartment pet, i didnt agree, i guess i was right after all.
And i had at least one of each of those dogs as i was growing up! What a coinsedence.
i like small size of dogs.
I vote for labs! Got two of them and they are a joy to have around the house. They don't know they're big! :)

I love dogs. I actually own a Pug-Tzu. which, obviously is a pug bred with a shih tzu. lol The father is the pug, he does bark... a lot.. but his bark is barely a bark at all, more like a squeak lol. I shared a space with a dachshund very recently. She was the dog of the family I nannied for and she was like my own, Dachshunds are VERY hard to potty train as a breed but at the age of 10 or so I managed to break her of her indoor potty habits. All animals can be taught at any age as long as you really stick with it. I really loved this hub because it gives a lot of wonderful pointers on different dogs. I was always a cat person until I got to hang around the dachshund and eventually got my own puppy. They really are great pets. =)
